Latest comic book haul from Criminal Records! I’m pretty pleased if I do say so myself.
I’m really excited to check out Jeff Lemire’s new project Plutona, though I do need to find issue #2. Bitch Planet Book One – finally!! Lumberjanes without Noelle Stevenson is tragic but I will persevere. Jughead gets his own book yay though I wish I had a better variant cover, that sounds douchey and I’m sorry. Also a side character finally getting his own comic – Chewbacca!! And 3 biggies from Marvel – Secret Wars, A-Force, and Ms. Marvel!
What’s been on your pull list lately?
I am so excited about this weekend’s comic book haul! #squee
Star Wars #4 – Hoping its better than #3
Darth Vader #5 – Still need to read the 4 #eek
Saga #28 – God I love this comic so much.
Giant Days #3 – One of my new favorites!
Ms. Marvel #15 – Always a delight 🙂
Nimona – I haven’t read the web-comic but I can’t wait to dive in!

What are you reading this weekend??
Saturday, May 2nd was Free Comic Book Day AND Independent Bookstore Day!! Needless to say, I spend the day with my favorite comic book shop Criminal Records and my favorite bookstore Little Shop of Stories who was also celebrating their 10 year anniversary.
So much activity in one day definitely led to a late afternoon couch nap during Star Trek TNG. I picked up 15 free comics from Criminal Records. The comics I picked up were a mix of ones I’d been looking forward to (Doctor Who, Boom!’s 10 year celebration), ones I’ve been curious about (Cleopatra in Space, Gronk), and ones that just looked cool (Lady Justice, Worlds of Aspen).
In honor of LSOS’s 10 year anniversary, they had a party in Decatur Square Saturday afternoon. I bought up An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir (a much anticipated read and my book club pick for August), enjoyed a delicious King of Pops ‘Little Pop of Stories’ – raspberry-lime flavored, and got a sweet temporary tattoo on my wrist ‘read’.
I rounded out my day reading The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black (May book club pick) and watching Orphan Black – all in all, a pretty magically nerdy wonderful day.
How did you spend Free Comic Book Day and Independent Bookstore Day??
I’ve been with Lumberjanes since the beginning and Issue #13 is by far my favorite! #13 shows all the Janes coming to camp at the beginning of the summer, an origin story if you will.
A few thoughts while reading:
Jo’s one Dad is a silver fox! Is that weird that I just thought that about a cartoon character? I don’t care, it’s true.
The beginning of April and Ripley’s friendship is so sweet!
Mal is such a badass.
Yay all the Janes are united!
There’s even an origin story for Bubbles!! I’m seriously contemplating Molly/Bubbles cosplay for DragonCon. Aw beginning of the best summer ever!!
The rest of my comic book haul includes Ms. Marvel #14 and Thor #7.
A great haul of my featuring my favorite comic book ladies! What comics are you reading this weekend?
Small comic book haul this week: Saga # 27 and Descender #2
Damn if little Gus hasn’t become one of my favorites characters!
I feel like Saga has turned into the old seasons of The Walking Dead – all the characters are separated and they are never all in one issue and I need them all in one place again!! I need to see The Will and Lying Cat!
I can’t wait to dive into Descender #2, I was so impressed with the first issue! But first is the Game of Thrones season 5 premiere #squee!
This weekend has brought a comic book haul of the black and blue color variety.
Darth Vadar #1 – 3: I was impressed with Star Wars #1 (2/3 were so-so) but I am still eager to start this new Darth Vadar. Questions! Will it parallel the current Star Wars (taking place after A New Hope) or will it go into Darth Vadar’s past? I’ll find out shortly!
Wytches #5: Each issue brings us closer to the unsettling truth behind the Wytches. After this first arc is resolved, I’m going to read them all back to back for maximum creepy factor.
Sex Criminals, Vol. 2: Two Worlds, One Cop (Issues #6 – 10): I can’t wait to dive into the next chapter of our favorite orgasm-having, time-freezing couple Jon and Suzie.
I’ve also finished up Prodigy (Legend #2) by Marie Lu and Extraordinary Means by Robyn Schneider, full review to follow.
What are you reading this weekend?
Ahead of the new Star Wars film being released later this year (don’t mess this up JJ Abrams!), Marvel is releasing a new comic book series by Jason Aaron, John Cassaday, and Laura Martin which takes place after Star Wars IV: A New Hope. There are 2 issues out right now. Now Star Wars is beloved in my household – we love the original trilogy and loath the updated CGI, we are pro-ewok – we own the Caravan of Courage and Ewoks the Battle of Endor, we quote ‘It’s a trap’ constantly and our dog was almost named Chewbacca (we went with Indiana Jones, one Harrison Ford for another).
The husband does not read comic books but I knew, I knew that Star Wars would open his eyes to the amazing world of comics. He listens to the audiobooks of essentially published fanfiction for Star Wars so getting him to read a Star Wars comic book would be a piece of cake. I picked up both issues yesterday from my local comic book shop. I generously let him read them first (I’m so nice) and they are fantastic!
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far way… – STAR WARS – oh god, how cool would it be if there was accompanying music?! If it was like a musical card and as you turned the pages there were different sound bites?? Aaron has captured the essence of Luke, Leia, Han, Threepio, and Vader himself. Their dialogue is spot on, I swear I can hear the actors voices reading the dialogue in my head. The characters are drawn to resemble their movie counterparts and it’s done well, artistic without being creepy. The storyline seems like a completely plausible adventure that would have taken place between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back and at this point, I don’t have any negative critiques. I did see from the ends of the issues there are upcoming comic books for Darth Vader and Princess Leia (different writers/artists). All the comics!! I really think this could be a gateway drug for my husband.
In addition to Star Wars, my latest comic book haul included Wytches #4, Ms. Marvel #11, Locke and Key Vol. 4, and mother effing Saga #26. Love love love Saga. Love Love love comic books.
