Playing Catch Up

Why hello there, long time, no see!  It has been quite awhile since I updated – over three months actually – eek!

My husband and I are expecting a baby boy in May so as you can imagine, our world is in the process of being turned upside down.  We’ve decided on a Harry Potter nursery, is anyone actually surprised??

Our baby announcement!

We’ve gotten some of the major furniture items, done the baby registry, my friends are planning my NC baby shower and my next item of business is researching daycare for after I go back to work. The whole things still seems surreal!

Harry Potter flying key mobile

My best friend from college was in Atlanta for a conference so we went a bit baby crazy.  We made this gorgeous Harry Potter mobile using this YouTube video as a reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wyvv5eVOLao.  I am absolutely in love with it!

Amidst all the baby preparations, I did keep up with my reading.  Yes it is February but I would still like to share a few of my favorites from 2015:

Favorite Comics – The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Nimona, Locke and Key, Rat Queens, Trillium, Descender, Wytches, Saga, Ms. Marvel

Favorite Books – Carry On, The Revenge Playbook, An Ember in the Ashes, Speak, I’ll Give You the Sun, Rose Under Fire, Legend

Favorite TV Shows – Orphan Black, Supergirl

Favorite Movies – Star Wars, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part Two.

I hope you all have been doing well these path few months, reading some great books, and nerding out with some wonderful fandoms!

Comic Book Haul

Latest comic book haul from Criminal Records!  I’m pretty pleased if I do say so myself.

I’m really excited to check out Jeff Lemire’s new project Plutona, though I do need to find issue #2.  Bitch Planet Book One – finally!!  Lumberjanes without Noelle Stevenson is tragic but I will persevere.  Jughead gets his own book yay though I wish I had a better variant cover, that sounds douchey and I’m sorry.  Also a side character finally getting his own comic – Chewbacca!!  And 3 biggies from Marvel – Secret Wars, A-Force, and Ms. Marvel!

What’s been on your pull list lately?

On Sundays We Read Comics

Finally, Finally, FINALLY! A new Ms. Marvel (#17) featuring Captian Marvel!! This issue was far too short for my liking and while Lockjaw didn’t make an appearance there were so many kitties!!
I decided I needed to see what all this Secret Wars business is and all I can say is I’m sorta still confused – haha.  I do read A-Force and Runaways and I get that these are a product of the Secret Wars but it is a little confusing since every character ever created is featured.  I’m obviously gonna stick it out but I definitely feel hindered by my newbie-ness.

And the odd man out of  the group – one of these things is not like the others – Issue #2 of We Stand On Guard.  Good follow up to #1, these soldiers are dropping like flies though! I like the switch between the past and present to get more backstory on what the eff happened between USA and Canada.

What have you been reading this weekend?

Last Week’s Comics Tonight

Last week brought some fantastic comics to my cubby at Criminal Records here in Atlanta.

Saga #29 – In the span of 20 pages, Saga has me cracking up over a serious NSFW 2-page lizard spread and then nearly in tears over an unexpected character death – how do you do this Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples?! HOW!

Descender #4 – If you have not picked up Descender yet, you absolutely must – consistently breathtaking artwork and a heart-wrenching story to boot.

Lumberjanes #15 – I just saw on Twitter that Noelle Stevenson is stepping down as lead on Lumberjanes.  I’m sad but I know that Lumberjanes will continue to be amazing as everyone works tirelessly to ensure Friendship to the Max!

Rat Queens Vol. 2 – I haven’t read Vol. 2 yet but I’m excited!!

Giant Days #4 – Giant Days continues to be a quirky, enjoyable read.  I am interested to see where the series goes.

Ms. Marvel #16 – Ramping up for a new story arc following Kamala’s heartbreak.  How about the cliff hanger for next month #squee!

What comics have you been reading?

Sunday Comics

I am so excited about this weekend’s comic book haul! #squee

IMG_4677Star Wars #4 – Hoping its better than #3

Darth Vader #5 – Still need to read the 4 #eek

Saga #28 – God I love this comic so much.

Giant Days #3 – One of my new favorites!

Ms. Marvel #15 – Always a delight 🙂

Nimona – I haven’t read the web-comic but I can’t wait to dive in!

Descender #3 – I can’t wait to read this, the end of #2 was so heartbreaking, please check out this new, amazing sci-fi comic from Image.

Thor #8 – The unveiling!!!  (I approve)

What are you reading this weekend??

Saturday Comics

I’ve been with Lumberjanes since the beginning and Issue #13 is by far my favorite!  #13 shows all the Janes coming to camp at the beginning of the summer, an origin story if you will.

A few thoughts while reading:

Jo’s one Dad is a silver fox!  Is that weird that I just thought that about a cartoon character?  I don’t care, it’s true.

The beginning of April and Ripley’s friendship is so sweet!

Mal is such a badass.

Yay all the Janes are united!

There’s even an origin story for Bubbles!!  I’m seriously contemplating Molly/Bubbles cosplay for DragonCon.  Aw beginning of the best summer ever!!

The rest of my comic book haul includes Ms. Marvel #14 and Thor #7.

A great haul of my featuring my favorite comic book ladies!  What comics are you reading this weekend?

Sunday Comics

Seems like weekend comic book updates are becoming a regular segment!  Up this weekend are Ms. Marvel #13, Southern Cross #1, and Star Wars #3.

Ms. Marvel continues to be one of my favorite comics as we follow Kamala Khan navigating Jersey City as a Pakistani-Inhuman American.  Kamala is learning what it means to be inhuman as she balances superhero training with her familial obligations – Kamala’s parents may or may not be trying to set her up with the son of a family friend, someone with a few secrets of his own.

Southern Cross is a new comic from Image written by Becky Cloonan and art by Andy Belanger and Lee Loughridge.  Alex Braith is taking a space shuttle to the mining planet Titan to investigate her sister’s suspicious death.  First impressions: 1) great artwork – I really like the blue and green tones, the character drawings, and the details of the space ship inside and out, 2) finally is a character named Erin (woot woot) who is also investigating Alex’s sister’s death, and 3) quite the cliffhanger ending.  Sign me up for Issue #2 in April.

Lastly, Star Wars #3.  This issue was alright, my initial excitement of the reboot has waned and even though the trio was battling to escape from Lord Vadar, the issue felt like mostly filler.  On the plus side, Star Wars has been a successful gateway comic book for my husband who has now read the new Darth Vadar, Saga, Outcast, Y the Last Man and has started Locke and Key #squee!
