Playing Catch Up

Why hello there, long time, no see!  It has been quite awhile since I updated – over three months actually – eek!

My husband and I are expecting a baby boy in May so as you can imagine, our world is in the process of being turned upside down.  We’ve decided on a Harry Potter nursery, is anyone actually surprised??

Our baby announcement!

We’ve gotten some of the major furniture items, done the baby registry, my friends are planning my NC baby shower and my next item of business is researching daycare for after I go back to work. The whole things still seems surreal!

Harry Potter flying key mobile

My best friend from college was in Atlanta for a conference so we went a bit baby crazy.  We made this gorgeous Harry Potter mobile using this YouTube video as a reference:  I am absolutely in love with it!

Amidst all the baby preparations, I did keep up with my reading.  Yes it is February but I would still like to share a few of my favorites from 2015:

Favorite Comics – The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Nimona, Locke and Key, Rat Queens, Trillium, Descender, Wytches, Saga, Ms. Marvel

Favorite Books – Carry On, The Revenge Playbook, An Ember in the Ashes, Speak, I’ll Give You the Sun, Rose Under Fire, Legend

Favorite TV Shows – Orphan Black, Supergirl

Favorite Movies – Star Wars, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part Two.

I hope you all have been doing well these path few months, reading some great books, and nerding out with some wonderful fandoms!

Last Week’s Comic Book Round Up

I got a little bit of everything in last week’s comic book haul – comedy, fantasy, superheroes, the works.

Archie #2 – For a comic book all about Archie, all I got say is Jughead is hella hot.  Jughead is even getting his own comic book 10/7/15 from Chip Zdarsky and Erica Henderson – More than burgers but mostly burgers.

Giant Days #6 – Love this cover!  Daisy and Esther are on a mission to find Susan after she disappears during Christmas break with some help from McGraw ❤2015-08-21 22.09.15

Rat Queens #11 – After falling in love with the trade volumes, I’ve crossed over into single issue purchases of Rat Queens!  I’m not over the moon with the new artist Tess Fowler, unfortunately Rat Queens has been plagued with artist problems after the original artist Roc Upchurch was arrested on domestic violence charges.  In other Rat Queens news, the series is being developed into an animated television series #squee!  You can read about it here.  Also I found out I’m missing the special on Braga – Imma gonna need that!

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 1 – I’ve heard so many good things about Squirrel Girl, I can’t wait to read it!  I picked it up on a whim at the new comic book bar in town – My Parent’s Basement, if you’re in the Atlanta area check it out!

The Runaways #3 – Runaways continues to be my favorite of the Battleworld comics ❤

Whatcha been reading??

Last Week’s Comics Tonight

Last week brought some fantastic comics to my cubby at Criminal Records here in Atlanta.

Saga #29 – In the span of 20 pages, Saga has me cracking up over a serious NSFW 2-page lizard spread and then nearly in tears over an unexpected character death – how do you do this Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples?! HOW!

Descender #4 – If you have not picked up Descender yet, you absolutely must – consistently breathtaking artwork and a heart-wrenching story to boot.

Lumberjanes #15 – I just saw on Twitter that Noelle Stevenson is stepping down as lead on Lumberjanes.  I’m sad but I know that Lumberjanes will continue to be amazing as everyone works tirelessly to ensure Friendship to the Max!

Rat Queens Vol. 2 – I haven’t read Vol. 2 yet but I’m excited!!

Giant Days #4 – Giant Days continues to be a quirky, enjoyable read.  I am interested to see where the series goes.

Ms. Marvel #16 – Ramping up for a new story arc following Kamala’s heartbreak.  How about the cliff hanger for next month #squee!

What comics have you been reading?

Bookshelf Thursday – Comic Book Cubby

The past year I have dived into the world of comic books and fallen in love.  This is my current storage method – I’m not sure the best method of storage but this has worked out better the more comics I acquired.  So that’s a sign to buy more comics??

Here’s the line-up: Ms. Marvel, Thor, Lumberjanes, Locke and Key, Saga, Nimona, Seconds, Courtney Crumrin, Descender, Star Wars, Outcast, Darth Vadar, Trillium, Giant Days, A-Force, Buffy, Orphan Black, Southern Cross, Wytches, Rat Queens, and Sex Criminals. Whew! (Or at least whew by my standards!)

What are your favorite comics? And what is your comic book storage methodology?

Comics Go Dark(er)

Here is a list of my comic book progression:

Ms. Marvel

Rat Queens

It looked like there was a trend that went badly wrong…

I received I think it was 99 free comics from in September as part of a promotion. Among the 99 comics was Nailbiter by Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson. Most of the comics didn’t catch my eye but damn the cover of Nailbiter #1! Nailbiter is about a town called Buckaroo, Oregon – the birthplace of sixteen serial killers, the most recent of which targets people who bite their nails and then proceeds to eat their fingers, among other body parts… The premise creeped me out to my core. Confession – I bite my nails, I have for years…

After the first free issue, I bought issues 2 thru 5 digitally via comiXology. It’s a different comic book reading experience, a digital comic versus a paper comic. I prefer paper copies but comiXology has a lot sales and promotions to introduce you to new comics (including one for the 12 days of Christmas!). I think for Nailbiter at least, I will stick to digital copies but Saga, definitely need a paper copy (single issues because I need to know what happens NOW and then the trade volumes for bookshelf consistency, seriously I’m obsessed) whereas Rat Queens, I will purchase just the trade volumes as they are released. Maybe it’s a little weird that I am so not consistent across comic books but I can’t really explain it. How do you prefer to read your comic books?

Nailbiter has some incredible, gory, awesome artwork.  If you’re a little twisted (like I apparently am), definitely check out this comic.

After Nailbiter who knows where this comic train will go! Any recommendations?

Buffy Meets Lord of the Rings aka Rat Queens

The comic book train shows no signs of slowing down! I started with Lumberjanes and Saga and am now working on expanding my meager comic book collection. I also began watching ComicBookTube (did I make that up??) and there are a lot of great videos online for new comic book readers!! One of the titles that kept popping up was Rat Queens by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch, marketed as ‘a pack of booze guzzling, death dealing battle maidens-for-hire → sign me up!

Volume One: Sass and Sorcery covers Issues 1-5 as the four kick ass ladies drink, fight, and screw their way through Middle Earth (not actual Middle Earth mind you but you know what I mean).

The Rat Queens are:

Betty, a hippie miniature elf addicted to magic mushrooms

Dee, a former cult member turned voodoo priestess

Hannah, a rockabilly elf with some serious magical prowess

Violet, a killer sword-wielding hipster dwarf

Rat Queens is funny, sarcastic, violent and sexy all at the same time. The illustrations are detailed and beautiful – I love the all the characters’ personalities, not to mention wardrobes (and tattoos!). The story is engaging. I have decided to stick with the bound trade books and Rat Queens Volume 2 hits shelves January 27th 2015!768097078227725994
